Your Guide to Obtaining a Passport in Uganda: The Process

Getting a passport can seem like a daunting task, but gone are the days where you would chase your papers from office to office; now you can apply for a passport online from the comfort of your home or office in a few short steps.

There are three types of passports provided for under the passport regulations of Uganda:

Diplomatic

Official

Ordinary

This article will focus on the application for an ordinary passport. This is what you will need to apply for a passport:

National ID or your National Identification Number (NIN),
A recommendation letter and the National ID of the recommender
Documents supporting your profession, if they are applicable to your application.

However, your recommender for the passport application has to be a person with a Ugandan passport or a National ID who can attest to your identity.

These are the steps to take to get a passport:

Go to the passport portal, accept the terms and conditions, and answer the security questions.
Complete the Passport Application Form, then print the Passport Application Payment Advice Form.
Make a payment for the type of passport you applied for using the selected payment method at the selected bank.
Schedule an appointment on the day and time of your convenience using the appointment link on the homepage.
Print the Passport Application Form and ensure to report to the selected passport center with the passport application form with the right application requirements.

Payement method

The application fees can be paid by credit card, online, or at the bank.

What is the total cost for an ordinary passport?

An ordinary passport costs 250,000 UGX; express processing is an extra 150,000 UGX; this extra fee is to be paid separately in a bank.

What is the total cost for Official and diplomatic passports?

Official and diplomatic passports cost 400,000 UGX and 500,000 UGX, respectively, but these are for specific, identified groups of government officials.
