On the 30th of August, the Chinese Embassy in Uganda announced that all short-term visa applications for single and double-entry visas between September 2, 2024, and December 31, 2025 would be exempt from fingerprint collection.
Fingerprints fall under a category called biometric data. Biometric measurements are measures of your unique physical characteristics, like fingerprints, facial features, iris measurements, and more. Biometric data are a collection of these specific measurements that can be used collectively or on their own to identify you.
Different government documents require your fingerprints as a way for them to identify you. For example, when applying for a national ID in Uganda, you need to provide your fingerprints. This also applies to passport applications, visa applications, work permits, and others.
What do I need to apply for a visa?
– A valid passport. Most countries require that your passport have at least 6 months of validity remaining on it from the date you intend to depart.
– A national ID. Having a national ID as an additional document of identification is helpful in case you cannot provide your passport due to it getting renewed or unavailable for some reason. It is additional proof of identity and nationality.
– Certificate of vaccination, like a yellow fever card and a COVID vaccination certificate.
– Proof of financial capability, like bank statements from your bank accounts to show that you can financially support yourself for the duration of your stay in the country and your departure from the country.
– Your flight tickets prove your travel plans and show when you intend to enter and depart from the country.
– Proof of accommodation; this document provides evidence of where you are going to stay while in the country.
– Visa fee receipt that shows proof of your payment of the visa fees.
– Travel medical insurance. This document proves that you have the insurance to cover any medical expenses that you may incur during your trip.
Different countries may ask for additional documents depending on what is required for the visa application process. Some countries have stricter and more rigorous visa applications than others, but these are the essential documents you will need to provide when applying for a visa.
Does Uganda have an e-Visa application?
In Uganda, with the introduction of the e-Visa on the 1st of July 2016, you can apply for a visa online. When the application is submitted and accepted, then you receive a bar-coded Electronic Travel Authorization via email, which you present once you arrive at the border post or airport. The barcode is then scanned into the immigration system, your fingerprints taken, and the fee paid. Then you get the visa printed and put in your passport. This process is applicable for not only single-entry visas but multiple-entry visas, business visas, East African tourist visas, and applications for work permits and special passes. It is $50 per visa.
How long does it take to get a Ugandan visa online?
The processing of a visa usually takes two to three working days. However, where more documents and/or verification are required, then the process may take longer.
What is an e-Visa?
An e-Visa is a visa you can apply for online compared to a normal visa that you would need to apply for by physically going to the embassy of the country you want to travel to with the necessary documents.
What is the difference between an ETA and an eVisa?
An ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital travel permit that allows international travelers to register electronically and avoid the requirement for a traditional visa. An eVisa is a visa you apply for online.
ETAs have a shorter and more streamlined application process compared to an eVisa, which has a more comprehensive application process and requirements.
Global Travel for Ugandans: Visas Required
For Ugandans traveling outside of the country, you would need to apply for a visa and have your fingerprints taken as part of the process. 39 countries, including every country in the East African community except Somalia which requires and eTA, do not require a visa for Ugandan nationals; 105 countries require a prior visa application at their respective embassies from Ugandan nationals; 230 countries require Ugandan nationals to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before traveling; 28 countries provide a visa on arrival; and 34 countries require eVisas for Ugandan nationals. All these visas require your fingerprints as well as all the other documents required for identification; failure to provide them would result in your visa being denied.
