The Namugongo Martyrs Shrine is a key site of Christian pilgrimage in Uganda. It’s a place of great historical and religious significance as it commemorates the execution of 32 young men from the court of the Buganda King Mwanga II in 1886. They were killed for refusing to renounce Christianity.

At the center of the shrine, a glass-encased monument marks the spot where St. Charles Lwanga, one of the martyred converts, is believed to have been burned alive.
