Jinja is the adventure capital of Uganda, if you are an adrenaline junkie then Jinja is the place for you. Whether you are more relaxed or a thrill seeker, Jinja has something for everyone.

As the source of the Nile, Jinja does not just have a couple of fun activities but it is also a place with a rich history and culture throughout the town and the district as a whole that is worth exploring.

1. White water rafting

Of all the extreme adventure activities in East Africa and Uganda, white water rafting is at the top of the list, it will leave you with long-lasting memories.

White water rafting happens in paddle rafts along a 30 km stretch of rapids along the River Nile. Each paddle raft can hold about 7 people, this is in addition to the guide. The rapids along that route are graded 1 to 12 or 1 to 6, with most of the most intense rafting trips happening on the hardest grade, 5 near Bujagali Falls.

Before you go on a rafting trip you get basic safety training that will ensure you understand what to do when in the water, and as you start the rafting trip there are safety boats that are available to ensure your peace of mind if you are nervous about the trip.

If you are travelling with family you can still do this activity as there is family rafting available that happens along grade 1 and 2 of the rafting because it has calmer waters.

2. Kayaking

There are two types of kayaking: Flat water kayaking and white water kayaking.

To take part in white water kayaking you sit in a narrow boat wrapped around your waist with a double-blade paddle, you can then explore the River Nile as you hurtle down the rapids with your guides.

For flat water kayaking you get a sit-on-top kayak and with your guide, you glide down Lake Bujagali as they point out the various bird species and answer any questions you may have about the local area and the lake in general.

3. Horseback riding

If you want to explore the shores of the Nile in a different way you can explore the banks of the River Nile on horseback. This activity is for the people who want a calmer activity to take part in while still being able to explore the shores of the River Nile.

This activity offers you a breathtaking look at the scenery around the Nile, and the hills, take a peaceful walk through Mabira forest and take a stroll through impressive plantations.

Horseback riding is a perfect activity to wind down after a day of adrenaline-pumping activities.

4. Bungee Jumping

If you like living on the edge and enjoy the feeling of excitement rushing through your veins then you’ll love bungee jumping. This activity includes jumping from a raised platform with bungee cords tied around your ankles or waist, don’t worry the equipment is regularly tested and the staff is well-trained so you are safe.

This particular activity doesn’t need you to have prior experience, you do need to prepare yourself psychologically to participate in it, especially if it is your first time engaging in it.

Bungee jumping is not for those who are easily scared but it is worth it conquering your fears and staying with unforgettable memories and amazing pictures.

5. Quad Biking

A quad bike is a multi-terrain vehicle that needs a few minutes of training to properly understand and operate. Riding a quad bike will allow you to see the sights that Jinja has to offer as well as see the local culture.

This activity is ideal for small groups and families.

6. Tubing

Tubing can happen on fast-moving water or at a slow laidback pace, which is what most people prefer. It is ideal for families and small groups that are just seeking to relax on the water and have a leisurely time of bonding. This activity takes place on a tube, (it looks like a tire without the ridges) that you sit in the middle of and you wear a life jacket for safety.

7. Ziplining

Ziplining in Mabira is an activity where you move through the trees from one point to another in a harness on a zip line. For the adventurous traveller, this activity is perfect in terms of the feelings you experience while you go through it and in terms of photo opportunities. It takes place in Mabira forest, which is about 20 km from Jinja.

8. Mountain Cycling

If water activities are not your cup of tea then you can opt for cycling. Sitting on a bike and cycling around is an excellent way to explore Jinja city, the shores of the River Nile, and the outskirts with all the attractions there.

You can move at your own pace and this is an activity that you can do in small groups and with your family.

9. Nile Boat Safari

There are a lot of things that you can do in Jinja but you cannot miss taking a boat safari on the Nile. Just gliding along the river soaking in the sun and taking in the scenery is a perfect way to experience the beauty and creatures that exist on, around, and above the river.

10. Paddle Boarding

Paddle Boarding is when you stand and balance on top of a board and with a paddle you move around. This is best done on calm waters because you will need to balance on the board. Before you start on it you will go through a 30-minute orientation on how to paddle board, the safety precautions you need to take, and don’t worry the whole time you are on the water you will be with your guides.

Jinja has a lot to offer in terms of tourist activities that you can indulge in, whether you are an adrenaline junkie or you just prefer calmer activities. When you are considering places to visit in Uganda, you should consider Jinja as a destination.
